A Bayesian two-stage biomass model applied to the English Channel stock of cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) ArchiMer
Alemany, Juliette; Rivot, Etienne; Foucher, Eric; Vigneau, Joel; Robin, Jean-paul.
Among the English Channel fishery, the importance of cuttlefish stock has increased, following the cephalopods global landings and market trend. An adapted stock assessment model is needed in order to give good management advice with accurate uncertainties. Age based methods in this species are hampered by time consuming age determination with statoliths. A model requiring few data and adapted to the species life-history is therefore proposed. An assessment of this stock was conducted in June 2015 by fitting a two-stage biomass model on a 22 years’ time-series (1992-2014). The use of a Bayesian framework is particularly adapted for decision making, allowing the propagation of uncertainty in the model. It also permits the use of different sources of...

A Bayesian two-stage biomass model for stock assessment of data-limited species: An application to cuttlefish ( Sepia officinalis ) in the English Channel ArchiMer
Alemany, Juliette; Rivot, Etienne; Foucher, Eric; Vigneau, Joel; Robin, Jean-paul.
Cuttlefish is a key commercial species in the English Channel fishery in terms of landings and value. Age-based assessment methods are limited by time-consuming age determination with statoliths and the lack of stock assessment models tailored to this data-limited species. A two-stage biomass model is developed in the Bayesian state-space modelling framework that allows inferences to be made on the stock biomass at the start, middle and end of each fishing seasons between 1992 and 2014, while accounting for both process and measurement errors and to assimilate various sources of information. A method that uses ancillary length-frequency data is developed to provide an informative prior distribution for the biomass growth rate parameter g (E = 0.89) and its...

A coupled biophysical model for the distribution of the great scallop Pecten maximus in the English Channel ArchiMer
Le Goff, Clement; Lavaud, Romain; Cugier, Philippe; Jean, Fred; Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan; Foucher, Eric; Desroy, Nicolas; Fifas, Spyros; Foveau, Aurelie.
In this paper we used a modelling approach integrating both physical and biological constraints to understand the biogeographical distribution of the great scallop Pecten maximus in the English Channel during its whole life cycle. A 3D bio-hydrodynamical model (ECO-MARS3D) providing environmental conditions was coupled to (i) a population dynamics model and (ii) an individual ecophysiological model (Dynamic Energy Budget model). We performed the coupling sequentially, which underlined the respective role of biological and physical factors in defining P. maximus distribution in the English Channel. Results show that larval dispersion by hydrodynamics explains most of the scallop distribution and enlighten the main known hotspots for the population,...

A two-stage biomass model to assess the English Channel cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis L.) stock ArchiMer
Gras, Michael; Roel, Beatriz A.; Coppin, Franck; Foucher, Eric; Robin, Jean-paul.
The English Channel cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is the most abundant cephalopod resource in the Northeast Atlantic and one of the three most valuable resources for English Channel fishers. Depletion methods and age-structured models have been used to assess the stock, though they have shown limitations related to the model assumptions and data demand. A two-stage biomass model is, therefore, proposed here using, as input data, four abundance indices derived from survey and commercial trawl data collected by Ifremer and Cefas. The model suggests great interannual variability in abundance during the 17 years of the period considered and a decreasing trend in recent years. Model results suggest that recruitment strength is independent of spawning-stock...

Channel and North Sea ray stock assessment in a data limited framework ArchiMer
Amelot, Morgane; Bastleer, Jurgen; Foucher, Eric; Girardin, Raphael; Marchal, Paul; Poos, Jan Jaap; Sys, Klaas.
Rajidae stocks (Raja clavata, Raja brachyura, Raja montagui, Raja microocellata, Leucoraja naevus and Raja undulata) in the English Channel and North Sea (ICES divisions 3a, 4 and 7d) are actually managed as a complex (“skates and rays”) and subject to a single TAC. TAC advices from the ICES are based on scientific survey indices trends from each species. Rajidae catches are mainly bycatch from flatfish fisheries such are sole (Solea solea) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) fisheries. Furthermore, because of their top predator position as well as their life history, Rajidae are species sensitive to overfishing. These different factors have led to a revision in stock assessment methods. ICES classified Rajidae as category 3 data limited stocks. The lack of...

Loubersac, Lionel; Lazure, Pascal; Dumas, Franck; Le Roux, Jean-francois; Riou, Philippe; Foucher, Eric; Guillaumont, Brigitte.
On the morning of the 31th October 2000, the Italian chemical tanker “Ievoli Sun” sank in the central Channel. Her cargo presented a risk of contamination for the marine environment and nearby coastal environment. From the moment the sinking was announced, Ifremer decided to implement, in almost real time, tools to produce and communicate environmental data. This paper presents the solutions chosen to develop: - a Geographic Information System to prepare maps, - a series of simulations for dispersion at sea of dissolved products - a general information web site structure (see http://www.ifremer.fr/envlit/surveillance/ievoli.htm). This paper will go beyond technical presentations of methods, tools and results obtained to take a critical look at the site’s...

Developing a multispecific stocks MSE framework : English Channel and North Sea Rajidae complex ArchiMer
Amelot, Morgane; Batsleer, Jurgen; Foucher, Eric; Girardin, Raphael; Marchal, Paul; Poos, Jan Jaap; Sys, Klaas.
Six Rajidae stocks (Raja clavata, Raja brachyura, Raja montagui, Raja microocellata, Leucoraja naevus and Raja undulata) are currently exploited in the English Channel and North Sea area (ICES divisions 3a, 4 and 7d) and subject to a TAC regulation. This TAC is set based on monospecific approaches (abundance indices) when mangement is complex based. However, stock status disparities exist between these species. In this context a multispecific MSE (Management Strategy evaluation) framework has been developped based on DLMTool package from R. The main objective was to estimate the complex management impact at the different steps of stocks management (data collect, assessment, management measures implementation). The species species assessement and ...

Foucher, Eric; Vigneau, Joel; Goraguer, Herle.
This scientific report describes the sea cucumber (Cucumaria frondosa) fishery in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon (France). A synthesis of knowledge on the biology and life cycle of this species is presented, as well as a history of the fishery. Using the data collected during the SPM2017-Hal scientific survey conducted in August 2017, as well as data from the professional fishery, both in Saint-Pierre and in Canada, an assessment of the sea cucumber stock and a diagnosis of the state of this stock are carried out. Management objectives for this stock, with a view to its sustainability, are proposed.

Ecosystem trends: evidence for agreement between fishers' perceptions and scientific information ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Prigent, M; Bertrand, Jacques; Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck; Delpech, Jean-paul; Fontenelle, G; Foucher, Eric; Mahe, Kelig; Rostiaux, Emilie; Trenkel, Verena.
The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. Fishers had an accurate perception of changes and their time-frames, but not necessarily of their causes....

ArchiMer
Foucher, Eric; Fifas, Spyros.

Foucher, Eric; Biseau, Alain; Berthou, Patrick; Fifas, Spyros; Forest, Andre; Vigneau, Joel.

Foucher, Eric.
The COMOR scientific cruises are aimed mostly at assessing directly the king scallop stock in the Seine Bay (listed deposit) and in the area located north of the listed deposit, and baptised "Proche Extérieur" (Close Outside). The assessment is based on a stratified random sampling scheme, each dragging accounting for one sample unit. The collected data enables the valuation of the abundance indexes par age class and area, the biomass available on each area, the demographic structure of the population, and the distribution of the population on the seabed. Foucher, Eric.

The annual assessment survey of the bay of Seine Pecten maximus scallop stock (COMOR44) took place from 4 to 23 July 2014. 183 dredges tows were carried out on the whole survey area. For all areas, the exploitable biomass consists only of 3 years and older scallops. The 2 years old scallops (cohort born in 2012) constituting the recruitment is virtually inexistent. Moreover, the observed growth is low for all adult individuals. The 1 year cohort is relatively abundant, their average size being in the average observed over the last 10 years. The global population is expected to increase again in 2015.
